Violin from the Atelier of Paul Blanchard – Labeled Lugdunum, 1906
This full-size violin, labeled Lugdunum and dated 1906, originates from the respected atelier of Paul Blanchard—one of the leading figures in French violin making during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After relocating to Lyon in 1875, Blanchard established a workshop known for producing refined instruments marked by tonal clarity and graceful craftsmanship. The Lugdunum label, using the Latin name for Lyon, was a distinctive feature of instruments produced under his supervision.
This example features a two-piece maple back with soft flame, a finely carved spruce top, and a beautiful orangish-brown varnish laid over a luminous golden ground—creating a warm, layered visual effect characteristic of fine French work. Tonally, the violin offers a focused, singing voice with warmth and projection, evenly responsive across all registers.
A graceful and musically rewarding instrument from one of France’s great ateliers, combining visual elegance with a rich tonal palette.
